Qatar P-5 Sample Design (Lusail site)
This sample design applies our understanding of Qatari traditions and history to a compact site in the Lusail new city development. It respects the cultural expectation of setbacks from the perimeter wall around the site, which requires a multi-story design, and locates one of the playgrounds on the roof. The school is shielded from the sun by a quilt of solar panels arrayed in a “sail” form, on an aircraft aluminum frame, whose shape was calibrated by the computer to protect the school from the sun during the academic year and sun angles during the days. The individual classrooms are “teaching labs” providing rear-projection, large-format-touchscreen, and other contemporary teaching technologies to reinforce the “flip” approach where in-class time is focused on direct teacher instruction instead of rote lecturing.
